Clive is at his desk, smiling

Clive Loseby is a global leader in website accessibility, a TED Speaker and the founder of Access by Design, an award-winning UK company specialising in accessible website design, accessibility auditing, consultancy and training.

Clive has worked in the digital industry for more than 20 years and founded Access by Design in 2006. His own experience of disability helped shape his determination to make the digital world more inclusive, at a time when accessibility was still widely treated as an optional extra rather than a fundamental part of good design.

In 2011, Access by Design created the world’s first fully accessible website that was also designed to work across mobile phones and tablets. This pioneering approach demonstrated that accessibility, creativity and technological innovation do not need to compete with one another. They can, and should, be built together.

Today, Clive works with public-sector bodies, charities, major businesses and digital agencies across the UK and internationally. Organisations he and his team have supported include Barclays, Amnesty International, Girlguiding, West Midlands Combined Authority, Wightlink Ferries and NHS organisations such as Great Ormond Street Hospital.

His work covers accessible website development, WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, manual accessibility audits, disabled-user testing, accessibility statements, remediation support, consultancy and training. Clive is particularly known for making accessibility understandable to people who may not have a technical background. He translates complex standards and legal responsibilities into clear, practical steps that organisations can act upon.

A central part of Clive’s approach is the involvement of disabled people throughout the testing process. Every accessibility audit delivered by his team includes real-world testing by disabled users, including people who use screen readers, voice-recognition software, keyboard navigation and other assistive technologies. Their experiences are recorded and presented alongside the technical findings, helping organisations understand not only which accessibility barriers exist, but what those barriers mean to the people trying to use their websites.

Clive’s TED Talk explores how poor digital accessibility excludes millions of people and why businesses must stop treating disabled users as an afterthought. The talk has reached an international audience of more than 1 million people and forms part of his wider mission to “Change the World, One Website at a Time”.

He is an experienced speaker, trainer and commentator on digital inclusion, accessible design, disabled-user testing and the commercial and legal responsibilities surrounding website accessibility. His style is direct, engaging and practical, combining technical expertise with lived experience and more than 2 decades of working with organisations at every stage of their accessibility journey.

Clive and Access by Design have received a number of awards and commendations, including the Digital Excellence Award at the 2024 Chichester and Bognor Business Awards, the Product Innovation Award at the 2015 Observer Business Awards and a Highly Commended award for Product Innovation in 2018.

Clive is based in West Sussex and works with clients and agency partners throughout the UK and beyond.
